Q:What is an ultrasonic scaler?

A:An ultrasonic scaler is an instrument used to quickly remove debris (calculus, tartar, plaque, etc.) from the tooth surface. It is typically used by the hygienist, but it also has applications in general dentistry, periodontics, orthodontics, and even veterinary medicine. An office will have an ultrasonic unit with an attached handpiece that houses various styles of inserts, depending on the type of work being done. Essentially, these units convert electrical energy into mechanical energy in the form of vibration.
